A Konnect Africa Interview with Steve Harris: Management consultant, Life coach and Top-class Motivational Speaker.

It’s another beautiful Monday friends!

Just the perfect day to treat yourself to a good dose of inspiration for the week ahead.

So sit back and enjoy this no-holds-barred interview with the amazing Steve Harris, a leading life strategist, exceptional motivational speaker, author, management consultant and self-acclaimed corporate sell-out.

Steve believes that everyone can achieve phenomenal success, and do the seemingly impossible. This is exactly what he has done, despite being a two time college dropout.

His personal creed is clear, “it’s not what you don’t have that limits you, it’s what you have, but don’t know how to use”

Be inspired!

Steve Harris
K.A: From school dropout to corporate sell out; how did the amazing transition occur and how were you able to cope with it?

Steve: You know what they say, nothing good comes easy. Dropping out of schoolwas never my intention. Sometimes life throws you a curve ball and you have to decide either to be thrown out of the game or hit a home run. I decided I’d hit the ball out of the park. I had low self-esteem, had to receive handouts from my younger sister who had a great job working with one of Nigeria’s leading banks, eventually started volunteering at my church, then moved on to become an office assistant in a Consulting firm, where I began to learn the ropes and became the Head of our Consulting Group in three years.

K.A: So having an academic challenge is not enough to make any student lose
hope in life?

Steve: No. I believe that ‘it’s not what you don’t have that limits you, it’s what you have, but don’t know how to use”. If you’re having academic challenges, try harder and use that frustration you feel as fuel to propel you to where you should be. Stop feeling sorry for yourself and get a move on!

K.A: I have had the opportunity of listening to you a few times and each time, I marveled at your wealth of knowledge and experience. How did you achieve this feat?

Steve: That’s very kind of you to say. Education isn’t limited to the four walls of a classroom. I’m a voracious reader and information junkie, I’ve also taken several courses that interest me and I’m also a certified Life Coach. I’m passionate about helping people optimize their potential and chase their greatness. That’s what inspires me.

K.A: Kindly give a sneak peek/excerpt into your new book ‘From College Dropout to Corporate Sellout.’

Steve: I wouldn’t say it’s a “new book” since it was published in 2011 and I’ve written a second one after that (From Friend To Fiancée: how to get him to want you, without him knowing that you want him to want you) and a third book in the works. But basically, everyone’s got a story…And a lot of stories start with the hero, setting out on a quest for self-discovery and miraculously becoming a huge success, but sadly, most of these stories leave out the most important middle, THE PROCESS!

This isn’t one of those books.

My book is a ‘no holds barred’ expose of how I dropped out of college twice (as if once wasn’t bad enough), floundered and faltered, abused substances and all sorts of destructive behaviour before I finally got on the right track…

…AND IT’s ALL TRUE!

K.A: Would you say that great public speakers are born or bred?

Steve:  [LOL]. All great speakers were born by a woman and then bred to develop their communication and oratorical ability.

K.A: What are your influences as a public speaker, author and management consultant?

Steve- As a public speaker, I’ve been influenced by TD Jakes, Paul Adefarasin, Fela Durotoye and President Obama. As an author, I’d say Paulo Coehllo and as a Management Consultant, Fela Durotoye.

K.A: You are clearly an ardent reader, what books have had the most impact on you?

Steve: The Bible (I know it’s a cliché, but it’s true for me. It’s filled with such insight), The Alchemist by Paulo Coehllo, Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell and my book, From College Dropout To Corporate Sellout.

K.A: Many young people wish to arrive at your level of affluence and knowledge; but it takes more than mere wishful thinking right? What is that thing you believe every young person must know/do to be able to make their mark in the world?

Steve- Find your passion. Turn it into a product and make a difference.

K.A: A dream doesn’t become a reality through magic; what would you say is the most important tip for remaining successful?

Steve: Staying power. You can’t afford to give up or quit when the going gets tough.

K.A: A meaningful life is…

Steve: …One that makes a difference

K.A: Inspire a young African in one sentence.

Steve: It’s not what you don’t have that limits you, it’s what you have, but don’t know how to use.
