Said Mahrouf, Iconic Invanity and Other African Designers at the MADEINMEDI 2013 Défilé: Africa Meets Baroque

Madeinmedi – Mediterranean Design & Fashion Week is presently on-going in Noto, Sicily from the 3rd to the 9th of June 2013. At its seventh edition, it has become a cult “Made in Sicily” event that, for seven days, will transform the UNESCO World Heritage city of Noto to a prestigious location for fashion and design.

Produced by Marco Aloisi and sponsored by the Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali (MIBAC) and the city of Noto, the Madeinmedi has become a reference point and an important showcase for well-known fashion designers, upcoming Mediterranean creative talents and international designers from Africa.

On the 7th and the 8th of June 2013, the Corso Vittorio Emanuele in Noto will turn into an exceptional catwalk that will host important names of the international fashion system and creative young African fashion designers.

Libya: Rujji Collection

The clothes and the jewels of Rujji Collection, the brand of the Libyan designer Raja Rayes who will seduce the Madeinmedi audience with the colours of her mysterious Tripoli. Raja, who recently showed her latest collection from her label, Rujji, at a fashion show at Bait Muzna Gallery in Muscat, said her designs are heavily influenced by Libyan culture. She uses traditional materials like patterned cotton, silk and silver to make her gowns and jalabiyas. To create different looks, she combines old material with new; merging her country’s past and present.

Sahara is an Egyptian house of design where anthropologist Shahira Fawzy translates her desert memories and her old Cairo memories into modern usable and wearable art. It is the first Arab designer that incorporates only traditional Arabic patterns, art motifs and the art of Arabic calligraphy.
