African Youths have yet another opportunity to sharpen their skills and improve themselves under excellent leadership training and mentoring because only last weekend, the United States President, President Barack Obama announced the Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders. This is under the aegis of the President’s Young African Leaders Initiative.
President Obama made this known during the Town Hall meeting with young leaders in South Africa which also had in attendance, African Youths from Kenya, Nigeria and Uganda who were connected via video conferencing. This program will begin in 2014 and will bring more than 500 young African Leaders to United States universities every year for 6-weeks of training in public management, business and civic leadership. The number will eventually be increased to 1,000 African youths and the formal training will be augmented by workshops, mentoring, and networking opportunities with leaders in each field, as well as internships across the United States.
According to the US President, this Fellowship will:
· Invest in a new generation of young African leaders who are shaping the continent’s future.
· Respond to the strong demand by young African leaders for practical skills that can help them take their work to the next level in the fields of public service and business.
· Deepen partnerships and connections between the United States and Africa.
· Build a prestigious network of young African leaders who are at the forefront of change and innovation in their respective sectors.
