Njeri Mucheru-Oyatta; The Lawyer with the Edge

Love them or hate them, lawyers are indispensable! As my Law Lecturer used to say, the role of the lawyer is so venerated that a whole arm of Government is dedicated to them, as well as a permanent place in governance via the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation; that’s how lawyers roll!

The Founder of Mucheru-Oyatta & Associates Advocates is one lawyer who is definitely on a roll. Born 19th January 1974 in Limuru Town, Kiambu County, Kenya, she is a graduate of the Keele University Staffordshire, England and holds a joint honours degree in Law & Politics and a Diploma from the Kenya School of Law. She was admitted to the Roll of Advocates in July 1998 after a period of pupillage at the Law firm of Amolo & Gacoka Advocates in 1997.

At the same firm, she garnered the requisite experience for a five -short- years before co-founding the Law firm of Gadhia & Mucheru Co. Advocates; not a step many young, female lawyers might contemplate, but Njeri Mucheru-Oyatta is not just any lawyer.

Her motivation for taking that very bold step were varied; the inadequate pay, and the realisation that she could do more in a niche of her own which was providing personalized legal services to corporate clients.

In an interview with touchbaseafrica.co.za, she stated, “I just took the risk and went out to do it,” The dream was birthed and is now a decade-old.

Renamed ‘Mucheru-Oyatta & Associates Advocates’ her Law Firm has an impressive list of corporate clients such as Standard Chartered Bank Kenya Limited, Bank of Baroda (K) Limited, Guardian Bank Limited and the China Development Bank.

Her success tips?

“Availability and turn-around time are the key things that give us an edge over other firms. We are focused on keeping our clients satisfied hence we are available whenever our clients need us. I communicate with my clients on email and telephone as efficiently and effectively as possible. I also ensure that I am personally involved in all matters that the firm handles.” [touchbase.co.za]

But it doesn’t stop with the clients; Njeri ensures that her employees and workforce actually relish and appreciate their jobs with admirable incentives and a welcoming smile. After all, a company is only as good as its workforce, isn’t it?

On mentors, Njeri fingers her father as the greatest influence in her life via his exemplary lifestyle and the choices he helped her make in her formative years.

She describes herself as ‘Called to rescue women’ and is in the process of setting up a Rescue and Retreat Centre where Group Support and Awareness Sessions, Professional Counselling, Life Coaching, Medical Care and Treatment and Personal wellness treatments (beauty therapy and massage therapy) will be offered to the women folk.

This mother of three and Lawyer with million-shilling retainers does not spend too much time dreaming; she’s too busy doing!
