Today, the 10th of October 2012 is the World Day against Death penalty.
Do you know that each time a person is sentenced to death the entire society and justice system could have sentenced an innocent man?
Do you know that the death penalty gives no room for correction and is irreversible in the event of an error?
Do you know that errors do occur and will always occur in the judicial system as long as judicial systems are manned by Human Beings?
Can you try to imagine the number of innocent men who may have been executed for a crime they knew nothing about?
Do you know that the death penalty does not deter people from committing crimes? How do you explain the increase in the rate of armed robbery and murder in Nigeria even though these offences are punishable by death?
Do you know that there are alternative ways of efficiently punishing offenders without resorting to the capital punishment?
Do you know that the death penalty is mandatory for capital offences in Nigeria, meaning that the Judges cannot even handle the cases on a case by case basis?
