We have some friends in our lives today because we share common interests and likes. There was one whom we sat next to on a bus the other day. He noticed the driver’s funny accent, glanced at us and we knew immediately that we were kindred spirits.
There are many other friends whom life, time and chance have blessed us with. With friends, we
make our choice and take our pick until we find those with whom we are best suited.
It could take quite an amount of effort to keep a friendship going. To oil the wheel of a relationship requires sacrifice and love. It requires that we rise above our laziness, pick up the telephone and make that call. It requires that we care enough about each other, such that we would graciously endure the inconvenience. But upon reflection, we will find that we spend a lot of effort questioning the worth of our friends and the quality of the relationship they bring to the table. We seem to conveniently forget, that it really does take two, and a relationship is only as good as both parties. We complain of betrayal and disloyalty. We say our friends demand too much of us, without giving so much in return. But really, we should be asking ourselves how loyal we are to our friends. How much are we willing to sacrifice for another? And to what extent are we willing to carry their burdens? On the night when they get into trouble and are faced with immense difficulty, will you be the one they call for help at 2 a.m.? Should they be faced with an embarrassing situation, the likes of which no eye or ear should see or hear, will you be the one they turn to?
Before we complain about our friends, and how little we enjoy from them, it is best we do some self-examination. How great a friend are you? Are you the 1 friend who will stick out in the crowd as being loyal to the core? Can others put their money, their jobs, their integrity or even their lives on the line for you? Make yourself a great friend and you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how those in your life will turn out to be the same for you…
