Spread Your Wings And Fly
They say that if you stay in the water for a little too long, you just might end up growing gills and a fin for your efforts. We pay so little attention to the crowd that surrounds us at our every point in life, that even when we‘re hanging out with the devil, we fail to notice the horns sticking out his head. Hang out with the wrong crowd for long, and there’ll be no telling you apart.
A Native American tale is told of an eagle’s egg placed in a brood with chicken eggs. The eggs hatched at their appointed time, and the eagle emerged with his “chicken siblings”. Time went by, and the eagle knew no better than the chickens; clucking and crowing, and scratching the earth for worms. One fateful day, the eagle looked up to see a lone bird flying majestically in the skies. He looked up in awe and said to his sister-hen “What magnificence! A bird like us flying in the skies”. In response, Sister-hen said to him “That bird is called an eagle, only eagles dare to fly so high. But you know, this is our place in the scheme of flight, spare yourself the idle thought and face your reality”. Like a chicken that he had now become, the eagle accepted those words, and died never having experienced a flight in the skies.
You put your destiny in grave danger by moving with the chickens. They may not even say words that sound like discouragement, but if the company you keep doesn’t make you seek for more out of this life, and for a much better future for yourself, then you’re probably an eagle living like a chicken. Mingle with the tough crowd that gives you something to think about everyday. Run swiftly away from anyone who tells you that you can’t do far better than you are doing presently. Look up; find your kind in the skies. Spread your wings and fly!
