Gnégnéri Yaya Touré- the Football Giant and All-time Record Breaker

Who does it better than our very own Gnegneri Yaya Toure; the extremely gifted and versatile footballer?

This top class Ivorian footballer is known and respected for his consistency, accuracy and unbeatable dexterity on the pitch. He is the kind of player that makes even the most uninterested a major football fan.

Toure began his playing career at Ivorian club ASEC Mimosas, where he made his debut at the age of 18.

In a bid to follow his childhood dream and aspiration, he joined ASEC Mimosas youth academy in 1996 on the kind recommendation of his long-time mentor Patrick van Reijendam.

His excellent performances eventually made a way for him and attracted international attention especially from clubs in Europe like; Beveren in Belgium where he played for two and half years, Metalurch Donetsk in Ukraine, Olympiacos in Greece, and AS Monaco in France.

Toure was born on 13 May 1983 in Bouake and is now recognized as one of the finest midfielders of his generation.

The young footballer has already got an interesting record of great achievements and victories; he was voted African Footballer of the Year for 2011 and 2012. He is also a two-time winner of the confederation of African Football’s player of the year and currently the only African on the 23-man shortlist for this year’s FIFA world player of the year.

A few days ago, another accolade came his way. He was voted the BBC African Footballer of the Year.

He has been a regular member of the Ivory Coast national team since his debut in 2004. And in 2006, he appeared for les Éléphants in all three of the team’s matches at its first ever World Cup.

In the 2010 tournament, he again appeared in all of Côte d’Ivoire’s matches, scoring the opening goal in a 3–0 win over North Korea.

Touré has also represented Côte d’Ivoire at five Africa Cup of Nations tournaments; in 2006, 2008, 2012 and 2013. In the 2006 and 2012 editions, the team ended as runners-up. He was named in the CAF’s team of the tournament in 2008 and 2012.article-0-12774EB5000005DC-522_634x380

This exceptional footballer currently plays as a midfielder for Premier League club Manchester City and The Ivory Coast National League.

He joined Manchester City in 2010 after signing a five-year deal with the club for a fee of around £24 million, and has since scored a number of key goals for the Citizens, most notably the only goals in the 2011 FA Cup semi-final and Final, he also helped them win the English Premier League in 2012 and the Community Shield.

It is on record that the football giant has gathered 109 games for City and scored 23 goals.

With such beautiful resume, he is perhaps the most valuable player for the club. He was nicknamed “the new Patrick Viera” by his older brother Kolo who signed for City in July 2009 from Arsenal.

Before joining city, Toure had spent three years with the Catalan giants Barcelona where he amassed an extremely interesting collection of honours, including two Spanish League titles, a champions League title, a UEFA Super Cup and a FIFA Club World Cup.

He made his official debut for the club on 26 August 2007 during the League opener against Racing de Santander. He is also known to be the first footballer from Cote d’ivoire to play for Barcelona.

The young giant as many pundits love to call him sure has an ace up his sleeves, his speed and brilliance has made him the sweetheart of soccer lovers.

He is the younger brother of Liverpool F.C player Kolo Toure and older brother of Makasa’s Ibrahim Toure. Now we all agree that it runs in the family.

Now at age 30, the young giant shows no sign of slowing down instead he lets his passion show as he keeps blazing the trail and making his mark.

He has made an excellent start to the new season with City, having already hit a minimum of seven goals in all competitions and produced consistently brilliant performances.

He joined a campaign against elephant poaching in October 2013, and was made a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Environment Programme.
