Inspired by his dream, Donald set out on a mission to reface Senegal. He was disturbed by the lack of waste management systems in his community, which was gradually reducing the streets of Dakar to dump sites.
Donald Bambara joined a team of students who shared the same burden to find a lasting solution to the menace that was gradually taking over his community. Together, they birthed Green’Act, a social enterprise, focused on improving the environment in Senegal. They then began installing measures to separate trash from recyclable materials on campus.
In his interview with “How We Made it in Africa”, the entrepreneur shares his passion; “In Senegal the waste management system is very bad and we noticed that there is no recycling system installed in schools and campuses, so this is the main reason we started Green’Act; to bring a change and to actually transform the society, the way they act and the way they manage their waste.”
The young change makers launched their first project in Donald’s school. You know like they say, charity begins at home. Next, they began educating other students on the benefits of recycling and maintaining a clean environment.
“We organised some events in order to promote greener habits. We did conferences, clean up sessions in the street and, after a year, we realised that people were starting to change their habits.”
In 2013, Donald Bambara’s innovation was noticed by the organizers of the Anzisha prize and he was named one of the 12 finalists for the year’s award.
In addition to other great initiatives, Green’Act has also set up a network of professional educators who teach sustainable development to students at all education levels. The establishment is also focused on giving life to the environment by planting trees and other plants in the community.
Donald’s belief is that real and lasting change starts with the youth, and that explains his continuous effort to educate the youths of Africa on the need to maintain their environments.
“We believe that the schools represent an important part in the sustainable development of the continent. Because if you change the schools and campuses where the future of the continent is trained, this will have a powerful impact on the next years for the continent.”
As part of their exceptional initiative, the Green’ Act geniuses have also developed a standard they called Sustainable African Schools and Campuses which is offered to schools that are able to maintain core Green’Act’s practices for three years. They believe this will be a great way of developing the first generation of sustainable African schools and campuses.
They also hope to extend the goodwill to other African Countries. Donald Bambara is making a lasting impact in Africa. His desire is to see Africa rise to her full potentials, and that explains why he is committed to raising other young and aspiring Africans who are willing to be the change agents our Continent desperately needs.
Words of wisdom; “I want the young African people who want to go into business to realise that if you want to create your enterprise, you don’t have to focus on money. You just have to be focused on creating something awesome, and once you create something awesome, money will follow.”
And like Konnect Africa, Mr Bambara says; “Africa needs you so never give up until you bring the changes that you want.”
