It is inspiring to see women who are courageously taking charge of their spaces, towering in amazing heights and making huge impact in the society. Angellah Jasmine Mbelwa Kairuki is one such woman. Focused and fiercely ambitious, with a combination of several amazing abilities and talents.
Born on 10 September 1976 in Tanzania, Angellah received a law degree from the University of Hull and a PGD in Legal Practice from Staffordshire University, but that may simply be described as her little beginning. The power woman is the current Deputy Minister for Lands, Housing and Human Settlement in Tanzania. Previously, she served as Deputy Minister for Constitutional and Legal Affairs. Before cutting her teeth in politics, Angellah worked in the Attorney General’s Chambers as Parliamentary Draftsman and as a State Attorney in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution.
An advocate of the High Court of Tanzania and a Member of Tanzania Institute of Arbitrators, Angellah took part in the inaugural Leadership for Change in Africa programme by the African Leadership Institute in 2012, and was on the list of Forbes magazine’s 20 Young Power African Women in 2013. A year later, she was chosen by the World Economic Forum to be a Young Global Leader.
At 39, Angellah has held positions at the helm of several organisations and also in government. Currently she holds the portfolio of Secretary General of the Tanzania Women Parliamentary Group. She is also a member of the National Executive Committee of the ruling party Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) and Member of the National Council of UWT, the ruling party’s women wing.
The leading lady has also worked in the Private Sector as Head of Department of the Ethics, Compliance and Governance at VODACOM Group PTY. In 2011 she was appointed by the Speaker of the National Assembly to represent Tanzania in the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and was later elected by the IPU assembly to become a Member of Human Rights Committee of the IPU.
Angellah Kairuki has a mission, to make a mark and leave a legacy in her field, and so she walks with purpose, facing each day with determination and courage.
