From Business to Nursing- How Amaechi “George” Ozor Beat the Odds to Excel in his Career

George couldn’t have imagined that a mere Google search would transform his career path forever.  He had worked for years as a business man until the going became quite tough, needing him to re-evaluate his choices and options.

He left his home in Nigeria to begin his career in the US at the age of 18 and enrolled at the University of Massachusetts, where he began taking general education classes with hopes of soon deciding what his major would be.

During his first run with the school’s ROTC program, George was told that he was too slow, but that didn’t discourage him, instead, he took that feedback and made an effort to improve. The positive attitude helped him to understand and relate better with the people around him.

With an interest in economics, George took a beginners course in economics, and as part of the program’s final project, he worked with a professor to research California’s efforts to correct environmental problems. There, he grew a deep love for California and eventually moved to the state after completing his bachelor’s degree in 2002. While there, he worked in the financial industry, dealing with commodities until he made the decision to launch out on his own, and built a commodities brokerage firm.

Shortly afterwards, he moved the business to New York City, where he excelled at the beginning until he started experiencing a downturn which was a result of the dwindling economy at the time. This shift inspired a desire in George to seek alternative career paths. He was surprised when his mum suggested nursing, as he had never imagined a career in nursing. He further reevaluated his career options and eventually contemplated his mother’s advice and discussed it with a few friends who worked as nurses.

His friends ran him through the basics, but that, he felt didn’t address some of the questions he had, and with the help of George got a clearer picture of what nursing entailed and enrolled in a CPR class with the Red Cross and also completed a CNA course.

George’s clinical was at a convalescence home where he assisted patients with daily care routines.  His experience with the Red Cross increased his interest in nursing, as he was delighted to be able to care for other people.

He further enrolled in the WGU’s B.S Nursing degree program, where he felt very comfortable to learn. George’s first job as an R.N. was in the ER, he worked as a Certified Emergency Nurse and took a trauma certification class at the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.

January 2015, he took a few steps higher on his educational ladder with a degree program in WGU’s M. S Nursing-Leadership and Management

Currently, George has big dreams for his new career,

Someday I will open a memorial clinic named after my mother in an under-served part of the world. I plan to leave a significant mark in the nursing world.
