Science Fair for Youths

More than 200 students from the 36 states of the federation are taking part in the 9th National Science and Engineering Fair which opened at the University of Lagos today. The biggest science exhibition for secondary schools in Nigeria will see students showcasing science and engineering projects, and is jointly sponsored by the Shell Petroleum Development (SPDC) Joint Venture, Intel Corporation and Interswitch.

The four-day event provides a platform for students to develop practical science and engineering solutions to challenges in their environment, through innovative projects. Science projects will be exhibited and assessed by a team of independent judges selected from institutions of higher learning and industries.

Head, Social Performance, SPDC, Emmanuel Anyim said: “Science is key to the development of any country, and we feel that the best way to begin is to encourage young talents by exposing them to global standards. And we’re happy that the young scientists are rising to the challenge already.”

The winners will be sponsored to the Intel Science and Engineering Fair in the United States where they will compete with over 1,500 other students for prizes.

As the students exhibit, their teachers will participate in a two-day Educator’s Academy, where they will learn about current Trends in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), including project management and mentoring of young scientists.

Giving details of this year’s National Science Fair in Lagos today, the representatives of the partnering companies said the event would enable the participants to grow from being basic learners to researchers and innovators, and will start to provide solutions to societal challenges.
